UndivineUndivine: Behind thy eyes

07/04/06  ||  Lord K Philipson

This is one of those reviews when you just know you won’t have anything remotely new to say about the band in question. Or anything close to even remotely funny. So for starters, sing with me:

“Pussy, pussy! All I want is puuuuuuuuuuuuuuussy!”

Thanx guys, it feels better now.

A completely new experience to me, this band. Never heard their name, never heard their music and they are obviously a get-together from bands like In Aeternum, Machine, Withered Beauty, Necrocide and Rimthurs (Rim- what ?). Not exactly bands well-known for revolutioning music. Or basically, not exactly bands known for much at all. They decided to hand us this CDR though and the first impression with the cover, a skull and a bright red logo, didn’t exactly suck cock.

While sporting a pretty rough sound (aka known as “not too fucken awesome”), Undivine’s (for most parts anyways) black metal comes thru pretty damn fine. The band’s not concentrating on being the fastest around and they are not scared to throw in some quite heavier and melodic moments, while still maintaining the black metal-vibe, for sure. Twin-guitar harmonies is the key here. You know, the likes of At The Gates, Amon Amarth and bla bla bla bla…

The title-track starts of really melodic and neat. I get both some Edge of Sanity and Dissection-vibes out of this and worse things can happen while listening to music. This is nothing near the material of those bands though, lemme make that perfectly clear.

“Through the eyes of madness” holds a quite neat breakdown in the middle where the bass takes command and they launch themselves into some more melodic parts, which is nice in between the blasts.

“And so I fall” follows the same formula as the others with some obvious early-Opeth influences when it comes to the guitars. If I’m not mistaken, some good’ol Bathory finds its way into the shit as well. After all, we are dealing with black metal here.

The closer, “To death you bleed”, holds a very nice opening-riff that grooves like a bitch on crack. I wish these guys used more of these things in the tunes. A nice, clean, guitar-thing ends this whole thing. Easily my favourite among the 4.

Undivine aren’t completely lacking identity but they do lack excellent songs to be able to stand out in the crowd. That, and a much better production. Not half-assed in any way and quite enjoyable in the end. But so is sticking yer cock in a rooster. Staff-member Farlus told me that.
